A distraught dad unwittingly listened to his daughter dying as she was hit by a stray bullet while on the phone.
Mirror Online reports that the daughter, Aaren O’Connor, was unaware she had been shot in the head and repeatedly told dad David “my head hurts” before becoming incoherent.
The 25-year-old had been sitting in her car outside her apartment in Chicago speaking to her dad during the tragic incident on Friday. She had moved to the area more than year ago from San Diego to be closer to her boyfriend and for a new job at toy company, Tomy.
But Mr O’Connor had raised his concerns with his daughter over fears something might happen to her after the city saw a rise in gun violence.
He told the broadcaster: “I didn’t realize at the time but I was just having the last conversation with my daughter.”
Mr O’Connor only found out what happened to his daughter after getting hold of her boyfriend Carlos, who called her roommate to check on her. They found her unresponsive in her car and she was rushed to hospital, where she died on Sunday.
Mr O’Connor paid tribute to his daughter, describing her as an “amazing girl” and spoke of his pride after finding out she was an organ donor.
Her colleagues have set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for at-risk youths in Chicago and to fund a scholarship in her memory.
It says: “Aaren was a beautiful 25 year-old woman who was intelligent, compassionate, caring, and hardworking with a deep love for her friends and family. She had a great sense of humor, love for adventure and a take charge personality. By simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time the world lost an amazing person and all of her potential.”
So far the fund has raised more than $27,000 (£18,500) towards their $50,000 (£35,000) goal.
“It gives her life meaning, and I so appreciate it,” Mr O’Connor added.
