A self-professed prophet in Zimbabwe has died trying to exorcise a house in the village of Mazonde.
According to local media. the prophet identified as Shamiso Kanyama was invited to the home of a family who were experiencing strange deaths of their family members.
The family identified as Leanmore Mutero, Tonderai Muswere, Michael Muchengeti, Manasa Mutero and Nicholas Mutero, appeared at the High Court in Harare to explain their involvement in the murder of the self-professed prophet of God.
High Court Justice Owen Tagu heard how on that day, the late pastor had been invited to the home in the Muzarabani district, which is situated along the Mozambique-Zimbabwe border, by the family's priest, Zvidzai Muchengeti.
The five men told the priest to help them clean their home of evil spirits in order to put a stop to the mysterious deaths in their family. Kanyama who promised to perform a cleansing ceremony, ordered them to dig a grave and bury him alive because that was the only way he would be able to ward off evil spirits.
Father Zvidzai who witnessed the whole thing, narrated how the prophet helped in the digging of his own grave by pegging the outline of the grave and asking the men to dig. He then said a prayer and jumped inside the grave.
'He laid face down in the grave then he ordered everyone to start covering him with soil,' Zvidzai continued.
Another witness, Joseph Taderera told Justice Tagu, “Deceased requested to be buried alive so that he would gain power to drive away the evil forces. I warned the men about the danger of their actions, but my advice fell on deaf ears because Kanyama shouted, telling me that I am disturbing his angels, and urged them to continue filling the grave, saying that he would later come out alive."
Kanyama urged them to continue the process of burying him alive despite pleas to stop. But he stated that he would rise from the grave unharmed.
His plan has however backfired. Members of his church dug up his body and he was confirmed dead. The men involved in the burial have been charged with one count of murder.
